In a major accident, at least 5 people killed and another seven are injured in the onboard explosion on the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC)’s ship Sagar Bhusan, which is now docked for the maintenance work at Cochin Shipyard.
The ONGC ship was exploded at about 10.30 am on Tuesday, while the ship was docked at the port for the maintenance work and the workers were engaged in the welding work; this untoward incident occurred, due to the leakage of gas.
Among the deceased workers, two are from Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL) and remaining personnel were from the contractor side. Injured workers are admitted to nearby hospitals and their condition is stated quite serious, as they are suffering from 50% burns.
An immediate compensation of Rs. 10 lac for each of the deceased’s kin has been announced by CSL and also ordered a detailed probe to find out the reason of the accident, while the fire tenders of CSL has brought the fire under control.
