Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas minister, said on Tuesday; the laying of gas pipeline infrastructure is the primary task of the GAIL, the state-owned gas utility, while the marketing of the product can be done by anyone else.
According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act; the marketing and the transmission of the product mix should not be done by the same organization, to avoid any kinds of conflict of interests.
Minister informed that GAIL has already started the Urja Ganga programme and prioritizes the provisions of Gas infrastructure in the Eastern Part of the country, which will connect Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
In an earlier occasion, the minister had said, “We have committed a gas-based economy to the country and are moving closer to that. The Eastern India project of Gail is vital for the industrial belt, especially the upcoming steel plants in that region. We are giving a viability-gap (funding) for a gas infrastructure project for the first time.”
